FIBER ART

I learned to sew from my mother, she made head wraps and Dashikis when I was a young child. I was inspired by how she would take remnants of fabrics my father would bring home from his job in the garment district of New York City. My mother would create stylish garments and home goods with those remnants. I am rooted in her core to hustle her wears and her desire to reinvent herself as a creative force.  Her creative force drives me creatively. Others who inspired me in my work are Faith Ringgold and Betye Saar.  My works consist of sewn fabrics that are embellished with beading, upcycled fabrics, cowrie shells, mixed medium, and embroidery. I use these items to create a narrative of the Adrinkra symbol philosophy and a contemporary expression of American history that is African-centered and inspired.
